What Makes A Film Christian?

I also know that not all films by Christians are uniquely Christian. I consider "Left Behind" as much a part of Christian cinema as I consider "The Killer Condom" a part of German cinema - that is, by definition alone. Art can be of a faith without possessing the faith itself.

Interesting. My 3 favorite movies are To Kill A Mockingbird, Forrest Gump, and Shawshank Redemption. None are Christian, but all are intrinsically spiritual and speak directly to the human spirit.

I can't figure out how "Christian" can be an adjective at all.

A "Christian film" makes as much sense to me as a "Christian bicycle". What would make a bicycle "Christian" exactly? Lots of stickers? A commitment to stay off the sidewalk? A "Jesus loves you" horn?

A "Christian film" is simply a movie that has been married to the "Christian subculture" (that's another story) so strongly that it would make absolutely no sense outside of that culture. (Much in the same way a film in Cantonese would make precious little sense to me if I watched it.)

Hi James and Jenn:
Glad you took some time to visit
apparently 34 seconds was all James needed to explore the monkey cage.
He must be a speedy 'devil'.

Did either of you read Seth's article? It is very interesting.

Jenn rightly implies that many "secular" films do a better job of exploring and even celebrating Christian values and themes.
Many in the "Thou shalt not say 'shite' all!" crowd find the most meaningfully Christian movies an afront to their delicate sensibilities.

Sadly many 'Christians' don't recognize Christian themes when they see them. Too often, unless the plots are dressed up in Biblical references and suitable costuming, we miss all the important parts.

Thanks James and Jenn for commenting...

PS. James, its lonely in the cage when its not visitng day. Don't be such a stranger.
Jenn is usually the only one who comes over to give me a peanut, or to make a funny face. She's quite a gal. You remember her from Romancing the Paradox. I think she and Chris had a hand in putting that baby to bed. I threw some poop around there as well.
We didn't want it to disappear. We just wanted reality to be well represented.
Is it kaput or can you ressurect it when you have the time?

One of my favourite 'Christian Movies' is A Beautiful Mind

I don't know if anyone else sees it this way.

Would it be useful (or slightly interesting)if I explained my reasoning?

What do you say to a "name your favourite 'Christian Movie' that is not a 'christian movie'" contest?

Big 'C' Christian representing the movies that express the faith well without neccessarily being ghetto produced or marketed.
While small 'c' christian are subculture scholck, purer than Jesus, holier than thou, and impossibler to watch productions.
